Iceland

Currently, and very loosely, a trip to Iceland is pencilled into the schedule for April/May 2011.

There is a story behind this of course. I have been on the look out for interesting photography trips lately and have been largely disillusioned by the lack of choice that fits what I want to do in places I want to go, and especially, the cost of those that turn up. By and large, the ones I’ve come across have been manned by very fine photographers, photographers I respect, like Joe McNally, for example, and Art Wolfe. The costs are prohibitive, running to almost €4,000. For a weeks’ holiday, it’s money I just can’t justify for myself. Which is a pity because to be frank, Art Wolfe’s wilderness photography is really very special and Joe McNally does very interesting stuff when he’s away as well. Some of his National Geographic work is exceptional.

When I voiced some discontent on twitter about the cost of going to Iceland in summer 2010 to do a McNally workshop, several people came back and said, well you know, you could definitely do it less expensively on your own. This I know is true. I’ve done a lot of photography field trips in the past, mainly in France it must be admitted but all the same. One person voiced an interest in doing such a trip but mentioned 2011 was the earliest he could possibly make it. I said I’d look into it and a second person came on board.

I’m not in the formal organising stage. The likely date is April/May 2011 so as to get a reasonable amount of day light. This is too far in advance to be looking at flight reservations which are typically only available a year in advance. What I will do, however, is start gathering information, links, useful sites, best case how to get there. I just want to take photographs of things I don’t see in the National Parks in Ireland.

As I know more about how this will work, it’ll be updated on this page.
